Are You at Risk for Denture Halitosis?

If you were under the impression that you would no longer need to worry about bad breath now that you have dentures, you are sadly mistaken.

Bad breath, or halitosis, is the result of bacterial growth, and unfortunately, artificial appliances like dentures are more susceptible to bacterial activity than the natural teeth. Without proper care, you could be dealing with denture halitosis.

Denture Halitosis Causes

Chronic bad breath when you have dentures will be a result of bacteria getting caught in the tiny spaces of your appliance. If you don’t properly clean the bacteria off, they’ll have the opportunity to reproduce and cause a foul odor.

In addition to the growth of bacteria, dry mouth can also be a problem when you are wearing dentures. The saliva in our mouths serves an important purpose, as saliva contains chemicals that will kill off bacteria and will deter bad breath.

A dry mouth will become a breeding ground for bacteria, so it is important to keep your mouth moist when you are wearing dentures so that you do not provide bacteria with an ideal living environment.

Treating Denture Halitosis

Luckily, there are ways that you can prevent or treat bad breath resulting from dentures. Taking good care of your dentures is the most important part, so be sure that you are cleaning them thoroughly each day and soaking them overnight.

Rinsing off your dentures with an antibacterial mouthwash can also be beneficial, as this can help to wash away any extra food remnants. If mouthwash isn't an option, a saltwater solution is a good alternative, and this rinse will also work to keep your gums healthy.

Proper denture care will go a long way in preventing denture halitosis, but if you have additional questions about how to keep your breath fresh with dentures, contact our office for tips.
