Top Five Causes of Tooth Pain and Sensitivity

Posted on 7/15/2016 by Dr Wael Garine
A man suffering from a sensitive tooth. We are often face with tooth sensitivity and tooth pain in our practice. Most things that cause tooth sensitivity end up leading to tooth pain so if you are experiencing some sensitivity, there is a good chance that you will soon experience pain if you don't come in and get checked out.

Brushing With Vigor or Force

So many people are surprised by this, but it is definitely the top of the list. Brushing too hard or too vigorously is common because of the mindset, "if some is good, lots is great!"

When pressing with a lot of force, or brushing for far too long there is a serious risk of actually brushing away the enamel on the teeth. The enamel is the outer, protective layer of the tooth and it doesn't regenerate, so take it easy and brush lightly.

Bruxism (Tooth Grinding)

This is another example of the enamel on your teeth being worn away, exposing the sensitive dentin below. Many times people who grind their teeth do so at night without even realizing they are doing it.

Too Much Mouthwash Use

Good oral hygiene routines are extremely important and mouthwash can be a great help in the fight against bacteria in the mouth. When used sparingly, mouthwash can play an important role but mouthwash with alcohol can dry out your mouth and even erode some of your enamel when used in excess.

Highly Acidic Foods and Drinks

Many soft drinks, coffees, citrus and even a lot of fruits are high in acid which can eat away at the enamel. When eating or drinking something acidic, it's not a bad idea to rinse with water afterward to ensure continued oral health.

Gum Disease

Gum disease it one of the most serious conditions that can cause tooth sensitivity and pain. Often, it can be hard to know if you have gum disease, and once you do it can be out of control and hard to reign in so it's super important to come in are soon as you notice irritation or sensitivity.
