Dental Inlays May Be a Good Alternative to Fillings

Posted on 5/27/2016 by Dr Wael Garine
A woman about to receive a dental inlay treatment.Has your dentist recently diagnosed your sore tooth as a cavity, or do you have a tooth that has suffered some type of damage? If so, you'll need to discuss treatment options.

Most people assume that the only way they can treat the problem is with a filling, but in reality, dental inlays might be a viable solution.

What is an Inlay?

A dental inlay is a custom restoration that is made of composite material or tooth-colored porcelain. It will be created in a dental lab before being permanently cemented to your tooth. Inlays are used to repair teeth that have large fillings that have become defective or for teeth that have suffered damage due to trauma and decay. They are an ideal alternative treatment to composite or conventional fillings.

What Happens during the Dental Inlay Experience?

Getting an inlay usually involves two appointments to your prosthodontist's office. Your first appointment should involve taking impressions or molds of your teeth.

These are important because they are used to develop your custom inlay. You may also get a temporary restoration in order to keep your tooth safe while your inlay is being created.

Your dentist will then numb your teeth so that he can remove tooth decay and older filling materials. The space is then cleaned out thoroughly, and the hole is prepared and shaped so that an inlay restoration will fit properly. Then, your temporary restoration will be put in.

At your second appointment, your inlay will be placed carefully into its proper position before being cemented. You may need a few adjustments to ensure that the inlay fits properly and that your bite feels comfortable.

After your inlay has been put into place, it is important that you follow your dentist's care instructions. As long as you do, your inlay should serve as a reliable, long-term dental restoration.
