Is Your Dental Crown Causing an Allergic Reaction?

Posted on 5/17/2016 by Dr Wael Garine
A diagram of how a dental crown works. Is your skin sensitive to certain types of metals? Do you break out or suffer from itching and irritation when you wear certain types of jewelry?

While these kinds of allergies aren't common, if they exist, they can cause irritation, swelling, and irritation.

Unfortunately, these same types of allergies could be found in metal dental restorations like crowns.

Crowns and Metal Allergies

With the exception of crowns that are made from resin or porcelain, all of these restorations will include metal of some type. The most common used today is the porcelain fused to metal variety, which consists of a porcelain tooth that is attached to a metal base that will go over your existing tooth.

While the metal is covered, it will still contact the gum tissue and can cause irritation if you have an allergy. One of the main reasons that this is such a problem is because your metal crown will be permanently cemented into place. You won't be able to remove it temporarily if you are experiencing discomfort.

Symptoms of a Metal Allergy in the Mouth

So, if you suspect that you might have a gum allergy, what are the signs that you should look for? First, the gum tissue around the metal crown will begin to look irritated, turning red and puffy.

This can sometimes look like gingivitis, but the symptoms are usually restricted to the area around the crown. Many people attempt to correct the problem by simply brushing or flossing better, but if an allergy is the culprit, the symptoms are going to continue regardless of the effort that you put into your oral hygiene routine.

If you suspect that you are allergic to your crown, it is important that you contact our office today. He can evaluate your symptoms and determine the best course of action to relieve your discomfort.
