Why Are My Dentures Causing Sores in My Mouth?

Posted on 4/27/2016 by Dr Wael Garine
A woman suffering from mouth sores causing her jaw pain.Have you been wearing dentures for years without a problem, but have suddenly started to notice sores in your mouth, especially on the gums? What could be causing those?

Your dentures have always fit before, so something else might be going on. While a trip to your dentist can help you to definitively identify the cause, these are a few common possibilities.

Bone Loss

Bone loss is one of the most common causes of denture sores in your mouth. With age, you will lose jaw bone, ultimately changing the shape of your jaw and potentially causing problems with the way that your dentures fit.

When the base that holds your denture base changes, your dentures will no longer fit properly. The face can even collapse vertically if that bone loss isn't replaced via building up the denture.

Change in Weight

Most of us aren't going to complain about losing a few pounds, but when it comes to your dentures, it can actually be a problem.

Both weight gain and weight loss can change the way that your dentures fit in your mouth, and the result could be sores on your gums or on your inner cheeks if your dentures aren't sitting in there properly. Changes in weight often require adjustment of your dentures or possibly a replacement.

The Shape of Your Mouth

Some people have mouths that simply aren't well suited to support dentures, especially if the shape doesn't allow for a proper seal.

If your mouth shape has changed since you first got your appliance, a new denture might work. If that doesn't do the trick, you may need a procedure in order to reshape your trouble areas.

If your dentures are suddenly causing problems in your mouth, the best thing for you to do is to contact our office.
