What to Do if You Have a Loose Dental Bridge

Posted on 2/17/2016 by Dr Wael Garine
A diagram of how a dental bridge works to restore your smile.A dental bridge that has been placed properly shouldn't come loose, but unfortunately, accidents happen.

A dental bridge may detach due to trauma, and sticky foods or tooth decay could also cause a bridge to start to slip out of place.

When this happens, you will want to have the bridge attached right away so that additional complications don't arise, but there are a few steps that you can take in the meantime.

Clean the Surrounding Area

If you have a loose dental bridge and you won't be able to see your dentist for a couple of days, it is important that you make it a point to keep the area clean. You will need to remove bacteria or food particles that have gotten stuck in the gap underneath your bridge, but it is important to do so carefully in order to prevent further damage.

Use a wet washcloth or your toothbrush to clean the area, or consider swishing a little mouthwash around if you feel that you can do so without causing the bridge to loosen any further.

Use Denture Adhesives

Again, if you can't make it into your dentist office for a day or two, there may be a few things you can do to keep your bridge safe. Denture adhesives can reattach the bridge temporarily. While these gels or pastes won't provide a permanent fix, they may be able to keep your bridge in place until you can get in to see your dentist.

Call Your Dentist

Scheduling an appointment to see your dentist as soon as possible is the most important thing to do if you are suffering from a loose dental bridge.

Allowing your bridge to remain loose or trying to fix it on your own will only cause more issues and can ultimately harm other parts of your mouth. Give us a call and let the pros handle your dental bridge correction needs.
