Is Bottled Water Causing Your Cavities?

Posted on 8/15/2015 by Dr Wael Garine
Two plastic water bottles beside each other.Bottled water is one of the most frequently purchased beverages in the U.S. In 2004, Americans consumed about 6.8 billion gallons of bottled water, showing an increase of nearly 9% from the previous year.

Grabbing a bottle of water is convenient, and you can easily enjoy a refreshing beverage that is taste and odor free. Unfortunately, by only drinking bottled water you are missing out on fluoride, and this trend is the primary culprit in the comeback of the cavity.

The Importance of Fluoride

Fluoride is an important mineral in the prevention of tooth decay. It is easily absorbed into the enamel, making the structure of the teeth more resistant to cavities. While fluoride is important for adults, it is crucial for children and their growing teeth.

Fluoride and Community Water Sources

Community water fluoridation has been in existence for about 60 years, and it involves adding fluoride to municipal water supplies in order to protect the teeth. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has since ranked this process among the top 10 public health achievements in the 20th century, and it has been found that most cavities can be prevented when community water fluoridation and dental sealants are combined.

After the community water fluoridation initiatives were put into action, significant results were noticed. Tooth decay among kids under the age of 17 decreased by about 29%. However, now that families are choosing bottled water in favor of tap water, it is feared that these numbers could begin to increase again.

Getting More Fluoride

If for whatever reason you are not able to drink tap water in order to get your daily dose of fluoride, you should be sure that you and your family are using fluoridated toothpastes. Please contact us about dietary fluoride supplements to determine if they are right for you and your children.
