Choosing the Right Dental Crown

Posted on 12/15/2015 by Dr Wael Garine
Dental CrownIf you’ve been told that you need a dental crown, you might not know exactly what to expect. However, crowns are fairly straightforward restorations that are designed to cover or cap an entire tooth in order to restore the appearance, shape, strength, and function. A crown will look like a replacement tooth, but a portion of our original tooth is still inside. There are several options available for crowns, and your dentist can help you to choose the right one if you decide on this restoration.

Temporary or Permanent

The first decision you will need to make is whether to invest in a temporary or permanent crown. Adults may receive temporary crowns initially while their permanent crown is being created in the lab, but children may keep temporary crowns for a longer period of time. Stainless steel crowns could be placed over the top of a decaying baby tooth, and when the permanent tooth pushes through, the temporary crown will also be pushed out.

Permanent Crown Options

If you are in the market for a permanent crown, there are several options from which you can choose:
•  Porcelain. These crowns tend to be the most popular option because they can restore the tooth while appearing the most natural. They can even improve upon the appearance of the original tooth.
•  Porcelain and metal. A crown that is porcelain, but fused to metal will be stronger than the porcelain version. However, if the porcelain wears down you will only be left with the metal showing.
•  Metal. These crowns are best suited for the back molars where they will be out of sight. They are durable and can withstand the force of hard chewing.
•  Resin. Composite resin crowns are affordable, but are prone to fracture and wearing down.

Ultimately the type of crown you choose is your decision, and with the help of your dentist, you can choose the right option for your teeth.
