Can Antidepressants Lead to Dental Implant Failure?

Posted on 12/30/2015 by Dr Wael Garine
Depression and Dental ImplantsDepression can affect your health in a variety of ways, but a new study recently found a connection between the use of antidepressants and dental implant failure. This study was completed by researchers from McGill University, and the team found that when people took some of the most common antidepressants on the market, they were twice as likely to experience dental implant failure. Some of the medications studied included Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Lexapro, and Celexa, and considering the wide range of people taking these medications, the findings of this study could make a big difference in the dental health of a large population.

Studying Antidepressants and Dental Implants

The study was initiated after reports surfaced that antidepressants could the likelihood of bone fracture. Researchers from the School of Dentistry at McGill became curious to see just how these medications might impact dental implants. To do this, they examined the health records of people with dental implants who were seen at a clinic in New Brunswick. A six-year period from 2007 to 2013 was examined, and follow-up was conducted with patients from 3-67 months after their implants were put in to see whether or not the procedure was successful.

The findings of this study were that the patients who were taking antidepressants were more likely to have experienced implant failure. What this information tells dental professionals and researchers alike is that when a patient is planning on having dental implants, they need to consult with their physician and dentist to ensure that any medications they might be taking won’t interfere with the success of the procedure. It may be possible for patients to change to a different medication in order to avoid potential problems, or an alternative dental option may be used in order to combat tooth loss without being negatively impacted by the antidepressant.
