What to Know Before You Get Dentures

While your dentist can evaluate your teeth and gums to see if dentures might help with your tooth loss, there are some important things that you should know about these restorative appliances.

Types of Dentures

Dentures can be used to replace some or all of the teeth. Complete dentures will replace all of the teeth, and they'll rest on the gums covering the jawbone.

The retention and stability of dentures may be improved by attaching them with denture implants, or removable dentures can be used.

Partial dentures will replace some of the teeth, and they are generally anchored to the remaining teeth that surround the gap. Dental implants can also be useful in stabilizing partial dentures and restoring the function and appearance of your smile.

Adjusting to Your Dentures

When you have your first fitting for dentures, it is common to experience minor irritation, but this should fade as your mouth gets use to them. Likewise, it may take an adjustment period to eat and speak properly with your new dentures, but these issues should subside within a few days.

Caring for Your Dentures

Proper care for your dentures is essential for the longevity of your appliance and to retain a natural appearance. It is recommended that you remove your dentures at night, and you should keep them in water or a cleansing solution overnight to prevent the appliance from warping. Properly cleaning will reduce the bacteria count on your appliance and in your mouth.

Visiting Your Dentist

After you have received dentures, please contact us for follow-up appointments. Your gum tissue will change with age, but your dentures won't adapt to these changes on your own. For this reason, it is important to have annual denture checkups, as an older appliance may need to have adjustments made in order to improve the fit.
